This was a bit of a hard year for me. I’d started Banjo Tooie but then I was also asked to do Donkey Kong 64, and then I was asked to do Perfect Dark as well……. Quite a work load! So, I had to pause my work on Banjo Tooie and get on with Donkey Kong 64 and Perfect Dark as they were going to be released before Banjo.
Doing Banjo Tooie was great fun as expected, I was still in the block with the team so it was that familiar environment I’d known for a while. In the middle of doing this game Rare moved a mile down the road to its new custom built premises that it now resides at. The whole company did the move together, we were all assigned different jobs to do and we got it all done in a day which was quite an achievement.
The game was much larger than Banjo Kazooie and I had twice the memory space for sound effects and video games music. I was particularly proud of Witchyworld, we’d managed to figure out a way of combining two midi files so I had double the tracks to play with, so the channel fades between all the different sections worked even better with more variety. Also Banjo transformed into lots of weird things so making the sound effects was great fun, the washing machine springs to mind! Atlantis was probably my favourite tune from this game, I thought it summed up the feeling of the underwater section
