Originally I wasn’t going to be working on Perfect Dark but Graeme Norgate left Rare to work at Free Radical which left the two games that he’d been working on (Jet Force Gemini and Perfect Dark) without any audio people. It was decided that Robin Beanland would do Jetforce and I would do Perfect Dark, I’d worked on GoldenEye so I knew the team well. It was really good to able to write music in that style, I really tried to get the futuristic atmosphere across in the pieces.
Dave Clynick had just been hired by Rare and since I was also doing Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo Tooie at the same time I asked him to do the cinematic sequences on Perfect Dark, and he did a great job. I remember going to E3 in LA and attending the Nintendo press conference which was in an old theatre, I didn’t know what to expect as I’d never been to one before. The lights went down and blasting out of the speakers came one of my Perfect Dark pieces accompanied by lots of weird dancers, very strange, still it sounded great! They also had a live jazz band in the pit in front of the stage. To my surprise they burst into a my version of the Donkey Kong theme tune that I’d done for Donkey Kong 64 which was also being shown, I’ve got it all on video……..great stuff!
I think Rare was really at its height in this period, I was really proud to be a part of all that we had achieved.
